Giant Dice Specifications

As a leading manufacturer and on-line retailer of children’s play mats and giant games, we very quickly discovered a lack of quality, colorful and easy to use giant dice to match with our giant games. And so we choose to begin to make our own.

Not before long we had teachers asking us if we could make them available - to sell to them, something we’d never even contemplated when we made our first dice.

In the future we will make a range of dice with a number of different game themes, but for now here are our giant dice specifications.

Giant dice size:

The size of our dice are 38cm x 38cm x 38cm or in the imperial system, 15 inches x 15 inches x 15 inches. They are designed to be a good size to be thrown by young children from the age of 3 years old through to adults. Its insignificant weight means there is no hazard associated with an impact from a dice.

What are giant dice made of?

We have chosen to make these dice from a 250 gram sports fabric with excellent wear ability and wash ability. This fabric can take the rough and tumble of being tossed repeatedly and more than occasionally jumped on; just as you’d expect when playing sports like football or rugby – or simply playing with one of our giant dice.

Fabrication of our giant dice:

The dice is sewn using an overlock stitch to ensure strong, durable seams that can withstand the forces of being tossed from pillar to post. There is a zip sewn into one edge to allow the filling to be tipped in and securely enclosed. .

Care of your giant dice:

All our dice are able to be emptied of their fillings and washed on a warm, gentle cycle in a washing machine. This keeps your dice looking as good as the day you first received it. In washing, please do not use harsh bleaching agents as this may cause excessive fading of the print.

Shipping of giant dice:

You’d expect a giant dice to be a “giant” size, and as would be expected this has a big impact on the cost of shipping it to you. So our normal recommendation is to buy the filling locally from one of the suggested sources listed below.

Giant Dice filling:

Our dice are designed to be filled with polystyrene beads used to fill bean bags. This gives the dice a delightful feel and a light weight of just 0.75 kg (approximately) which is well within the capabilities of a three year old to hold and throw. Filling a dice will take approximately 50 liters (1.9 ft ³) of beans or expressed another way; it has a volume of 0.05 meters cubed.

Enviro-friendly dice fillings:

Whilst our dice have been designed for filling with bean bag beads, there are other options that are more enviro friendly. So read on if you prefer greener options…

- crumple up old newspapers into small balls around 2.5 cm or 1 inch round and place them inside the dice. As children jump on the dice, this will compress, so you’ll need to be prepared to re-charge the dice occasionally.

- make paper mache balls and fill the dice. This will more easily survive robust play and not require the extra refills of just newspapers. Making the filling is short work for 10 or more children.

- fill with straw, hay, pea straw or chaff. All of this can be found at your local grain and fodder or animal feed stores.

- you can find and recycle old pillows or foam mattresses into 2.5cm or 1 inch squares and use this as filling. You may also find in shops PU granules or similar that can be used as filling.

A work of caution on dice filling:

Styrene bean bag beads, offer a low cost, low weight option for filling our dice. The enviro-friendly choices may cause the dice to be of a weight where it is not easy for 3 year olds to use them – so take care.

Giant Dice safety advice:

We do not recommend use of our giant dice for children younger than 3 years old. Children MUST NOT open the zip of the bag without adult supervision as there is a risk of suffocation from placing the beads in your mouth. Keep the giant dice away from all sharp objects as there is a risk of rupturing the dice and spilling its contents.

Giant Dice filling suppliers:

Finding suppliers for the filling material is as simple as Googling the term within your country, region or town, “bean bag filling” or another phrase that works is, “polystyrene beads”. If you check to be sure it’s the material used for filling bean bags then it’s going to work just fine.

You’ll also discover, most major department stores, discount department stores and very often, major toy retailers are also stockists of bean bag filling. And finally, retailers of bean bags are a quite logical source as well.

Good luck.
